The Purpose and Fulfillment of Family: Nurturing the Next Generation for a Better World

I often ponder the question, What is the purpose of family? The responses I receive vary widely, encompassing ideas such as love, support, care, companionship – even fun. While these answers are commable, I believe there are deeper dimensions that we need to rediscover about family's true mission.

Family serves as a collective entity, akin to institutions like schools, governments or businesses. Its primary function is the transmission of values so that children can transition into society as responsible contributors. With each successive generation successfully fulfilling this duty, they build a more harmonious world.

The Power Behind Telling Generations About Our Heritage

Unfortunately, there are numerous instances where past generations fled to pass down vital stories and principles meant to guide future ones. One of the most alarming verses in the Bible speaks to this issue Judges 2:10:

Yet another generation arose that did not know YHWH or what He had done for Israel. - Judges 2:10

How could such a disconnect occur? Why were generations unable to share with their descants the God who had miraculously liberated them from Egypt and led them into the Promised Land?

In contrast, the Bible illustrates vividly how each generation of God's people instructed subsequent ones about His deeds. The following verses emphasize this theme:

Deuteronomy 32:7 - the days of old; ponder generations past; ask your father, and he will reveal them to you; inquire of your elder siblings and they will tell you.

Exodus 13:14 - When your children in future times ask what these symbols mean, tell them, With a powerful hand, YHWH brought us out from slavery.

Joshua 4:21-22 - Tell the people of Israel that when their children later inquire about these stones, say this to them: When God brought you across Jordan on dry land, He did so.

Psalm 71:18 - Even until I am old and my hr turns gray, YHWH do not forsake me, but let the next generation proclm your power to those yet unborn.

Psalm 78:6 - Teach these stories to future generations, that they may know them; tell this story of God's mighty acts to children yet to be born.

Psalm 145:4 - Generations will pass and then come new ones, who will prse your works and declare your power to those still to be born.

The Force for Good That Family Can Be

Family is designed to transc generations. I've never encountered a family that set out to ruin their offspring; rather, we all hope that our children will carry on with the same core values that define us.

We wish them to continue purposefully through life's challenges, never forgetting who they are and whose they are, perpetuating a legacy of strength and resilience. A practical step for discussing your family's values could be by downloading my guide titled Identifying Your Family's Values.

In essence, the purpose of family is to build multi-generational forces for good.

The Impact of Sharing Our Family's Values

In our journey towards building legacy, we often encounter the concept of leaving behind not just wealth but also a meaningful impact.

I've seen many examples where families have adjusted their dynamics in 2023 to better align with these values:

  1. Some parents have become more mindful about setting for their children when it comes to financial decisions.

  2. Others have started involving the whole family in charitable activities, fostering a culture of giving that transcs individual members.

In your quest to build legacy for your family or advise those who do so, consider these aspects:

  1. How might you incorporate your family's shared values into dly routines?

  2. What strategies can you implement to ensure future generations are aware and carry forward the impact you wish to leave?

Let be a stepping stone in your journey towards creating not just financial wealth but also legacy that lasts through time.
